Parisian Style: Creating A Personal Identity (Part III)

The Basics | Building Your Wardrobe | Creating A Personal Identity

Now you’ve got a closet full of great wardrobe pieces. But how do you go from a closet full of items to an actual outfit?

You follow a formula, that’s how! Now, this is only four different outfits, but it gives you a baseline for how to turn your collection of new clothes into a sophisticated outfit!

These looks are all easy to recreate. Notice that not every item was listed on the previous capsule wardrobe post, but they are items you probably have in your closet already–a bodycon dress, cropped cardigan, and peep-toe shoes.

I like the following diagram as well. While basic, it provides a great starting line for virtually any Parisian-inspired outfit. The attention to detail with the accessory portion is also a good way to add variety to your looks. You don’t want your closet to get stale, so spicing up your looks with accessories is a great idea. It’s also an inexpensive way to change up any outfit.

For virtually any occasion, this diagram can work for you. Layer your button downs with your sweaters; wear a delicate camisole underneath one of your tops; wear a casual top with an outlandish skirt. Don’t be afraid to try unexpected combinations–like a tulle skirt with a leather jacket. They add interest and help you develop your personal style.

Should you wear heels or not? Depends on the length of your skirt.

Remember, it’s important to not get lost in trying to emulate French fashion. What we’re trying to do here is develop a new style that is customized to your personality and your life. If you would never touch a dress except for special occasions then don’t add one to your closet. However, if you want to start a new evolution in your fashion, then maybe a casual dress would be a good place to start. It’s important to balance what you normally wear and what you’re comfortable wearing with items that will elevate your style.

If you live in sweatpants and t-shirts, a legging-type ankle pant and a super soft sweater would be a great way to start transitioning your style. It’s the baby steps that make all the difference!

What will set you apart from other women aiming for the same effortlessly chic look will be your accessories. Classic pieces like watches, scarves, studs, and delicate bracelets will never go out of style. Printed shoes and handbags are another great way to differentiate yourself from others.

With just a few tweaks to your pre-existing style, you’ll be ready with fresh Parisian looks.
